Alpaca Breeders

Early European and American Alpaca breeders had to work hard on creating Alpaca bloodlines adapted to their climate and living conditions. In the middle of the 20th century, a great work on promoting Alpaca wool was performed by farmers and designers of clothing. The groundwork has been laid for a promising future of Alpaca fiber in fashion industry. Nowadays, when Alpaca fiber has become a very fashionable and versatile material, any farmer who has enough land can keep a herd of Alpacas and make profit by selling their fleece or ready-made items of clothing.

There are many things to consider before you start looking for Alpaca breeders in your area. Purchasing Alpacas for the farm should be done after a thorough investigation. Owning Alpacas is quite different from owning cattle, goats and sheep. Although Alpacas are very quiet and undemanding, they have their own keeping requirements. First and foremost, you need a quality lawn for Alpacas to graze on. A novice owner who wants to get profit by selling Alpaca fleece should be knowledgeable not only in Alpaca husbandry, but also in marketing. Purchasing Alpacas can be a good investment and a source of income only when you know what to do.

To start an Alpaca farm a novice owner can buy a pair of high quality animals. After a few years, several more Alpacas can be bought to form a herd. All responsible Alpaca owners sooner or later have to become Alpaca breeders. Breeding implies greater knowledge and skills and simple ownership. Several unsuccessful matches can ruin the whole business, because the offspring with poor fleece characteristics is worth next to nothing. To keep the bloodline “pure” mid quality animals should not be bred. Alpaca industry continues to grow and the earlier you join it the greater profit you get.

It’s very important to specify your long term goals. Alpaca owners often have to choose between breeding business and fiber business, because it’s difficult to combine both in the same farm. There are Alpaca fanciers who don’t want to make a profit on fleece, but want to keep an Alpaca as a pet. Such people can obtain a pet quality animal and never breed it. Most Alpaca breeders can sell a pet quality Alpaca at a discount.
