Alpaca Farm

Anyone who visits an Alpaca farm will soon find out that most Alpaca fanciers raise and keep these wonderful animals not only for their luxurious fleece, but also for their temperament and unique personality, which make them different from other domestic animals. Alpaca owners are never bored to communicate with these intelligent and quick-witted creatures. Alpacas can be referred to as a mixture of farm animals and family pets.

As for the fleece, the main income of any Alpaca farm, it’s very fashionable nowadays and is seen on the high fashion runways. Alpaca wool can be used for many things: sweaters, hats, shawls, coats, socks, gloves, blankets and children clothes. This material is warmer than sheep wool, silkier than mohair and softer than cashmere. Alpaca is both warm and light, which makes it versatile and suited for any occasion. People with allergies for wool have no problems with Alpaca items.

To maximize the profit, an Alpaca farm can produce fiber and create hand-made clothing instead of selling sheared wool. It takes much time and effort to shear a herd of Alpacas, prepare the fiber, spin the yarn or make felt and finally create clothing for sale. Many farms that raise llamas and Alpacas exchange their fleece and items of clothing for various products. Some Alpaca farms have small stores where they sell fashion products.

A reputable Alpaca farm improves the quality of fiber by selective breeding. Every litter should be carefully planned, because an Alpaca producing poor quality fiber is worth nothing. Baby Alpaca fleece is very expensive, because it’s much softer and finer than fleece of adults. To have baby fleece available every year, there should be at least 10 animals at the farm. The reproductive rate of Alpacas is not high, and the gestation period is rather long. Alpaca females give birth to one baby every 2-3 year.

Nowadays, the popularity of Alpaca products continues to increase. Raising Alpacas for fleece becomes more and more lucrative. Keeping a herd of Alpacas is a good investment. Being low-maintenance and hardy animals, Alpacas are easier to keep than cattle and sheep. Even a beginner can buy several Alpacas and launch a business. A landowner of today has no problems with finding a breeding stock and starting an Alpaca farm.
