These creatures were domesticated from their relatives the guanaco and vicuna about 7,000 years ago in the Andes to provide clothing and transportation for humans. The whole Incas’ industry was based on this fiber; they even made roofs and bridges of it. Alpaca animals are protected by conservation laws against hunting.
