Inca alpaca population was saved from total slaugher thanks to conservation practices of banning their hunting and exportation. Among the Andean people this fiber was currency and only the Royalty wore it. In efforts to conquer the natives Spaniards slaughtered about 90% of their domesticated and carefully selected camelids. Camelids in South America originated in the Andes and were highly valued by early civilizations, which domesticated and improved their characteristics. Arriving in Peru Spanish conquistadors where everything from apparels to bridges and roofs was made from fibers supplied by cotton and camelids. Inca alpaca population was saved from total slaugher thanks to conservation practices of banning their hunting and exportation.
