Alpacas - Habitat
Alpacas live in the Andes in semi-domesticated state. The herds are kept at great height over 4,000 meters on the altiplano and feed on very scarce vegetation. The climate is extremely changeable there. It is very hot in the summer; in the winter it is very cold with sharp wind and heavy rain, especially at night.
Weight: 100-170 pounds.
Height: 2-3 feet at the withers.
Life Span: 20-25 years.

Alpacas - Description
Alpacas look like small llamas; they are compact with a long neck, small head, short and low set tail. The feet of Alpacas are soft with two toes from which nails grow out and down. Such feet and low food demand make these animals environment-friendly, which means that Alpacas don't spoil even the most delicate of terrain.
Alpacas are classified into huacaya and suri according to the fiber type. The huacaya type has a dense, crimped, wooly and short fiber, which is water-resistant and abundant. About 90% of all Alpacas in the North America are huacayas. The suri type is characterized by a very fine and lustrous fiber, which grows parallel to the body in long separate locks. Such type of Alpacas is very rare.
