Alpacas - Fiber

The fleece of Alpacas is one of the softest, silkiest and warmest natural materials in the world. Alpaca fiber comes in 22 natural colors and can be blended into an infinite array of colors without dyeing. It makes Alpaca fiber suitable for people with allergies and very sensitive skin. If colored, Alpaca fiber takes and retains dyes very well. High quality Alpacas, especially babies, have no guars hair in the fiber and no lanolin. The products made of this material are very long lasting and easy to care.

Alpaca fiber has excellent thermal and insulation qualities; it is abrasion resistant, doesn't retain water and resists solar radiation. These qualities are useful in the Andes with harsh and changeable climate. Alpaca fiber contains microscopic air pockets, which create insulating qualities and make the fiber extremely light weight.

Alpacas - Buying

The Alpaca Registry should register all Alpacas in North America. Modern DNA technologies verify the lineages. Like all domestic animals, Alpacas are classified as pet quality and show quality. Pet quality Alpacas cost about $1000-$2000 each. They cannot be bred and their fiber is not of the best quality. Female Alpacas of champion bloodlines range about $12,000 to $30,000. High quality herd sires reach up to $90,000. Owning a herd of show quality Alpacas is an excellent investment because stud services are very expensive and the demand for Alpaca's fleece and fiber is growing.
